Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer Update and Video Preview

October 13, 2011 1 comment

Bioware recently detailed Mass Effect 3’s new multiplayer in a post on the Bioware Forum putting most worries, concerning the integrity of the single player experience, to rest.

“Under the direction of Casey Hudson and other team veterans, both studios make contributions to both the single player and multiplayer modes in Mass Effect 3. Rest assured that no compromises were made to either of these modes in the development of Mass Effect 3” said community coordinator Chris Priestly.

The post also reports that the multiplayer can, if you choose, have a direct effect on your single player campaign through something  Bioware calls “Galaxy at War System.”  This gives players another way to “have control of their game experience” by “impacting their galactic readiness level” in the final fight against the reapers in the single player campaign.  However Priestly makes it clear that this new system is completely optional “it is still possible to achieve the optimal, complete ending of the game in Mass Effect 3 through single-player alone.”

Some of this is difficult comprehend since most, if not all of us, haven’t seen this Galaxy at War system in action. Here is a Bioware preview that might help explain.

Mass Effect 3’s Executive Producer Confirms Multiplayer

After some speculation by IGN and some other video game sites, it has been confirmed by executive producer Casey Hudson via Twitter that Mass Effect 3 will contain co-op multiplayer missions:

IGN had previously reported that a South African advertisement listing pictured the ME3 Collectors Edition features on the retail box, one of which was an “online multiplayer pass.”

Many fans our worried that the integrity of a role-playing game like ME3, that focuses solely on single player, could be seriously damaged through the introduction of a multiplayer component.  Perhaps there is a chance not as much attention would be given to the single player experience or that the co-op missions could detract from the submersed feeling of playing a RPG.  However Bioware is considered as one of the best at what they do and it is hard to believe they would make such a catastrophic mistake.

Will Mass Effect 3 be completely and utterly ruined with it’s new multiplayer feature or are crazy fans being just, well crazy? Tell me what you think in the comment section.
